Hi all!
Welcome to another Top 5 Saturday Reads meme. It was created by the lovely Mandy over at Devouring Books as a way to share books that we would love to read. This week’s topic is: Creepy Books I Want to Read.
As someone who’s had ‘Read a (creepy) Stephen King book’ on their bucket list for years, it’s safe to say that I’m a complete and utter wimp when it comes to anything spooky. There are however, a few books I really want to read, despite the fact that I’ll probably have nightmares for days.
Here they are:
The Institute – If you skipped over the blurb at the top, let me remind you: I ADORE Stephen King’s book On Writing and have always wanted to try one of his more ‘spooky’ books. The cover of this one (as well as the teen element in the premise) caught my eye. I’m secretly hoping it’s not as scary as some of the reviews have made it seem. Fingers crossed as I’m waiting on a reservation for this one from my library!
The Wicked Deep – I’ve read some really mixed reviews on The Wicked Deep but I’m really keen to read Winterwood and thought it might be a great time to read this one while I’m waiting for Winterwood’s release. It’s unlikely that I’ll get to it in time but you never know. I might just surprise myself!
Spiderwick – I’ve been a fan of Holly Black for YEARS but sadly have to admit that I haven’t read that many of her books. I’m keen to try The Spiderwick Chronicles as I’ve read some reviews saying it’s a spooky read but not overly scary. Here’s to hoping they were telling the truth! Can you really go wrong with faeries though?
Through the Woods – I’ve been really getting in to graphic novels lately and this one is no exception. It’s been on my TBR shelf for a little while now and I’m keen to see how the short story format works in a graphic novel. I’ve read anthology novels but haven’t seen one in artistic print, so this one’s definitely one I’m excited to try!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – I watched the Netflix series (with great apprehension at first) and fell in love with the semi-scary and mostly addictive life of Sabrina. I’m a mega fan of TV shows that feature high school (I love a good teen drama show – just ask Nen) and this one really piqued my interest. I’m keen to see the prequel to the show and find out more about Sabrina’s life before she had to choose between being a witch or human.
// have you read any of these books? are they on your TBR? //
Oh the wicked deep is so problematic I can’t. Book has absolutely zero clue about the topic of agency and consent….
Such a problematic read so unsurprising probably that I’m one of those that rated it one star! 🙈

HAHA I can always rely on you to let me know about problematic plot lines!! 😀 agency and consent is a big issue though. Damn, I’ll have to really consider that and read some more reviews. Thanks for letting me know Emer 🙂 Jen

It’s a topic that a lot of people missed in the read because it is to do with a key aspect of the plot and I think that a lot of people didn’t pick up on it. But sadly it can’t truly be discussed without delving into spoilers

Yes to the spiderwick chronicles!! I was a huge fan when I was in 8th grade 😅 though it’s filled with « monsters », I don’t recall it being scary at all. But then again I haven’t read them in so many years.. ahaha but little me wasn’t afraid xD

If you weren’t afraid when you were young there’s hope for me! I love monster stories that aren’t terrifying… if that even makes sense 😛 Jen

Ooh there’s a movie? I’ll have to check that out! I really enjoy reading a book and then watching the movie afterwards (always in that order 😛 ) Jen

I love reading Stephen King books. I have most of them on Kindle but not read quite a few of them. But have read nearly all the physical ones I own. I’m trying to build my physical Stephen King book collection one book at a time lol

Ooh I’ve seen that some of the physical copies have bright colours? I’d love to have that collection of them! It might be a good incentive to actually try one 😛

I haven’t read any of these because I, like you, am a wimp! Some of them do sound quite good though so I might have to take a chance.
Great post 😊

I’m glad I’m not the only wimp! Spiderwick is MG level ‘scary’ so I’m hopeful that’s not too bad haha. I can’t wait to read it and then watch the movie 🙂 Jen

I recently read The Wicked Deep! Is that the UK cover?

How did you find it? Yeah it is the UK cover. They sell it here (Down Under) and it’s the cover my library has 🙂 Jen

I borrowed it from my library and the cover was different. I think I prefer the UK version better!

I have the Institute on my tbr list too! I figure if I can finish IT, I can get through anything else. At least there’s no clowns this time, I guess??

HAHA that’s true! Clowns freak me out SO MUCH. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to get through reading It but the Institute looks really interesting 😀 Jen

HAHA I do so much GR’ing… that should be a real thing! Thanks Kitty Marie. I enjoy reading hyped books but quite often I like to read some that I haven’t heard much about 🙂 Jen

I’m definitely not one for the spooky reads but I do want to try reading some more of King’s books because everyone loves him and FOMO? The Institute really sounds good though. I was so tempted to pick it up the other day at the store but couldn’t justify the cost. It was bloody expensive! 🙈

I know!! His new releases are always ridiculously expensive. I’ve had mine on reserve at the library but it’s taken FOREVER. I swear, people started signing up for the reserve list like 6 months before it was out 😛 I’m never that organised ahah! Jen
